Time and time again
“The greatest gift you can give someone is your time, because when you give your time, you are giving a portion of your life that you will never get back.”
And I thought to myself, “That’s so true!!” These words kept circling in my head and it suddenly struck me. Our parents, siblings, teachers, friends and all our loved ones inadvertently give portions of their life to us and we take it for granted. We do not realize that time never comes back. We are taught about the importance of time since childhood but do we really understand?
I thought of all the time wasted quarreling and holding grudges and understood that those portions of our lives are like pieces of mold in bread. When you look at a moldy slice of bread, you do not see the rest of the bread that is fine, you only see the speck of mold, and you chuck it out. Similarly, when we look back at our lives, we only remember the disagreements, the quarrels- that one bad thing someone did to us. Like that one time a friend went out to a restaurant without us. Or the one time our sibling forgot to inform us of something important. Or the time Mama forgot to call because of her busy schedule. Such petty things! They affect are lives in negative ways and create crevasses between healthy relationships. So, why not instead remember all the good times, ponder on all the good things someone has done for us. Why not live life for the present instead of the past or future. Why not appreciate the good times and ignore the bad times? Forgive, forget and move on.
